Andrew

The first time I ever saw a DJ was the music video for "3 MC's and 1 DJ" by The Beastie Boys. I want to say this changed my life and from then on I've wanted to DJ but that would be a filthy lie. In reality, it was when I was 15 and I was living in England; I saw how a guy (Cut Chemist) playing other peoples music could control a crowd of people.

I find it pretty amazing how, with the right soundtrack, people will lose their inhibitions and just have a good time. It's a cool thing to see when someone isn't concerned about what they look like because they are much more interested in dancing like crazy.

I got my start in the Calgary music scene when I was hired to be a record monkey at the record store Phonics Sounds. This job was pretty much the coolest thing since sliced bread, and I'm a big fan of sliced bread. I essentially got to listen to all the latest dance music, and chat with other DJ's about the latest cool tunes. Exposure to so many different styles of music really led me to stop thinking that you only should play one or two types of music.

I pretty much play every genre except those ones that begin with "Hard." I currently am shifting between funk and minimal techno.not the most usual combination. I think its because one is so in your face while the other is a lot more subtle and building.

You can catch me DJing at a restaurant called The Coup, mostly providing some funky background music, or on the dancefloor at one of Calgary's many fine DJ nights.
