Stevie Wonder was Master Blaster Jammin’ and Kurtis Blow had just let the world know about The Breaks; but at the time, Alice was taking her first tentative steps on the sun-drenched beaches of northern California. Rather surer steps brought her north of border and despite stints in Toronto, Boston, and one very long stint in Calgary, she now calls Vancouver home.
Inspiration came in many forms and though Alice now wears the headphones, when she was younger, her brother was the one with a pair of turntables and a mixer, not to mention a pile of 80s pop and rock records. Luckily, the music didn’t make much of an impact at the time. Years later, her friends were the ones wearing the headphones – a near vampire in her night owl tendencies, Alice befriended a host of local DJs, and became a regular at many of Calgary’s more musically discerning club nights along the way. She gives credit to her friends for not only exposing her to varied musical and DJ styles, but giving her the confidence and opportunity to start DJing herself.
A rising talent on the Vancouver scene, Alice can currently be found behind the dusty stacks at Beatstreet Records (439 West Hastings), and hosting Fiction Saturdays at Fiction Wine bar, located at 3162 West Broadway with a blend of electronic beats and soulful melodies that has quickly gathered a devoted audience. With impeccable taste, Alice unearths the finest songs: House, soul, funk, hip hop, nujazz, downtempo, and the occasional drum’n’bass – No genre is left unheard in her search for tasty musical treats.
